Incorrect sizing is the most common mistake in interior design. Learn the exact dimensions needed to perfectly frame your space.
For a standard living room, an 8x10 or 9x12 rug is ideal to anchor the seating area. In a bedroom, an 8x10 fits perfectly under the bottom two-thirds of a Queen bed, while a 9x12 is best for a King. For a dining room, always add at least 4 feet to both the length and width of your table so chairs don't fall off the edge when pulled out.
Both are correct depending on the room size. The 'all legs on' approach (often requiring a 9x12+ rug) is the most luxurious and unifies a large open-plan space. The 'front legs on' approach (usually an 8x10 rug) is the industry standard for most living rooms and effectively anchors the seating arrangement.
A Queen bed requires an 8x10 foot rug placed perpendicular to the bed, covering the bottom two-thirds. A King bed requires a 9x12 foot rug using the same placement. Never place a small rug solely at the foot of the bed, as it shrinks the perceived size of the room.
Rectangular rugs are the standard for defining geometric spaces like living and dining rooms. Runners (usually 2.5x8 ft) are perfect for hallways, kitchens, or alongside beds. Round rugs should be reserved for uniquely curved architecture, circular dining tables, or grand entry foyers.
The '12–18 inch rule' is the industry standard. You should leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor visible around the perimeter of the rug to frame the room correctly. Pushing a rug completely flush against the wall mimics wall-to-wall carpeting and loses the architectural border effect.
