When exploring hand-tufted wool rugs, it is essential to understand both the construction and the application. Hand-tufting is the perfect balance of craftsmanship, design flexibility and accessible pricing. A skilled artisan uses a hand-held tufting gun to punch yarn through a pre-stretched canvas, following a paper pattern. The piece is then trimmed, carved, latex-backed and finished with a cotton lining — producing a plush, sculpted rug in a fraction of the time of a hand-knotted piece.
Coupled with this, pure wool is the soul of Indian carpet weaving — naturally resilient, stain-resistant and warm underfoot. Our handmade wool rugs are crafted in Bhadohi (the carpet capital of India) using premium New Zealand wool spun on traditional looms by master artisans with decades of experience. Each piece is knotted or tufted by hand, hand-finished and washed with herbal solutions to achieve a soft, lustrous finish that synthetic rugs simply cannot replicate.

Not quite — hand-tufted rugs typically last 10-25 years with normal use, versus 50+ for hand-knotted. The difference is the latex backing, which can dry out over decades. For an heirloom piece, choose hand-knotted; for everyday luxury at a better price, hand-tufted is excellent.
A faint smell from the latex adhesive is normal for the first few weeks. Air the rug in a well-ventilated space (or outdoors on a dry day) and the smell will disappear. We use low-VOC latex for all our pieces.
Hand-knotted wool rugs use individual wool knots tied by an artisan, which makes them denser, longer-lasting and reversible. Machine-made rugs use glue-backed synthetic fibres that shed and flatten within a few years. A well-made handmade wool rug from Bhadohi will last 30-50+ years.
New Zealand wool has longer staple fibres and a naturally higher lustre, which produces a softer, shinier finish that takes dye beautifully. We use it for our premium collections, while local Indian wool is used for hard-wearing flatweaves and dhurries.
