Rugs for Dining Room

The dining room rug needs to do two jobs at once — define the dining zone visually and accommodate chairs pulling in and out without catching. The rule of thumb: your rug should be at least 24 inches larger than your dining table on every side. That gives you room to slide chairs back without their rear legs falling off the rug.

For a standard 6-seater rectangular table, that means an 8x10 ft rug. For an 8-seater, choose 9x12 ft. Pure wool is the best material — it tolerates the inevitable spills, hides crumbs between vacuuming, and stays beautiful for decades. Avoid silk and viscose (too delicate for dining) and high-pile rugs (chairs catch).

Hand-knotted Persian and Mughal floral designs are classic dining-room choices because their busy patterns mask everyday wear-and-tear elegantly.
