Hand-Knotted Bamboo Silk Rugs

When exploring hand-knotted bamboo silk rugs, it is essential to understand both the construction and the application. Hand-knotted carpets are the highest expression of the weaver's craft. Each knot is tied individually by hand on a vertical loom — there is no glue, no shortcut, no machine. A single 8x10 ft hand-knotted wool rug can contain over a million individual knots and take a skilled artisan 6-14 months to complete. The result is a heirloom-grade piece that gets richer with age and lasts generations.

Coupled with this, bamboo silk is a sustainable luxury — derived from bamboo cellulose, it carries a soft, silky hand-feel and gentle sheen that compares closely to real silk but at a more accessible price. Bamboo grows quickly without pesticides, making this one of our most eco-conscious lustrous fibres.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a rug is genuinely hand-knotted?

Flip it over — on a true hand-knotted rug the back of the design is as visible as the front, with slight irregularities in knot spacing. Hand-tufted rugs have a glued canvas backing. Machine-made rugs have perfectly uniform knots.

What does KPSI mean?

KPSI stands for Knots Per Square Inch — a measure of how fine the weave is. Higher KPSI means more detail, longer making time and higher price. Wool rugs typically range 80-250 KPSI; silk rugs can reach 400-900 KPSI.

Is bamboo silk really silk?

No — it's a regenerated cellulose fibre (a type of viscose) made from bamboo. The name reflects its silky look and feel, not its origin. It is fully plant-based.

Is bamboo silk eco-friendly?

Bamboo grows rapidly without irrigation or pesticides, so the raw material is highly sustainable. Production uses chemical processing, similar to other viscose fibres, so look for OEKO-TEX certification (which all our rugs carry).
