When exploring hand-knotted cotton rugs, it is essential to understand both the construction and the application. Hand-knotted carpets are the highest expression of the weaver's craft. Each knot is tied individually by hand on a vertical loom — there is no glue, no shortcut, no machine. A single 8x10 ft hand-knotted wool rug can contain over a million individual knots and take a skilled artisan 6-14 months to complete. The result is a heirloom-grade piece that gets richer with age and lasts generations.
Coupled with this, cotton rugs and dhurries are lightweight, breathable and remarkably easy to live with. Flip it over — on a true hand-knotted rug the back of the design is as visible as the front, with slight irregularities in knot spacing. Hand-tufted rugs have a glued canvas backing. Machine-made rugs have perfectly uniform knots.
KPSI stands for Knots Per Square Inch — a measure of how fine the weave is. Higher KPSI means more detail, longer making time and higher price. Wool rugs typically range 80-250 KPSI; silk rugs can reach 400-900 KPSI.
Small cotton dhurries (up to 3x5 ft) can usually be machine-washed on a cold gentle cycle. Larger pieces should be dry-cleaned or spot-cleaned to preserve shape and colour.
Cotton flatweaves are durable for low-to-medium traffic areas. For hallways and heavily used rooms, we recommend wool or jute instead.
