Flatweave Wool Rugs

When exploring flatweave wool rugs, it is essential to understand both the construction and the application. Flatweave rugs have no pile — they are woven flat on a loom with the weft yarn interlocking through the warp, creating a thin, lightweight, fully reversible rug. This construction has been used across India, Persia, Turkey and the Caucasus for thousands of years for everything from saddle bags to palace carpets.

Coupled with this, pure wool is the soul of Indian carpet weaving — naturally resilient, stain-resistant and warm underfoot. Our handmade wool rugs are crafted in Bhadohi (the carpet capital of India) using premium New Zealand wool spun on traditional looms by master artisans with decades of experience. Each piece is knotted or tufted by hand, hand-finished and washed with herbal solutions to achieve a soft, lustrous finish that synthetic rugs simply cannot replicate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do flatweave rugs need a rug pad?

Yes — strongly recommended. A quality rug pad prevents slipping, adds cushioning underfoot, protects your floor, and extends the rug's lifespan by reducing friction.

Can flatweave rugs be used outdoors?

Wool and cotton flatweaves are indoor-only. For covered outdoor areas we recommend our recycled PET flatweaves, which are weather-resistant and fade-proof.

Why are handmade wool rugs better than machine-made?

Hand-knotted wool rugs use individual wool knots tied by an artisan, which makes them denser, longer-lasting and reversible. Machine-made rugs use glue-backed synthetic fibres that shed and flatten within a few years. A well-made handmade wool rug from Bhadohi will last 30-50+ years.

Is New Zealand wool better than Indian wool?

New Zealand wool has longer staple fibres and a naturally higher lustre, which produces a softer, shinier finish that takes dye beautifully. We use it for our premium collections, while local Indian wool is used for hard-wearing flatweaves and dhurries.
