Hand-Woven Wool Rugs

When exploring hand-woven wool rugs, it is essential to understand both the construction and the application. Hand-woven rugs are produced on traditional treadle looms where the artisan interlaces warp and weft yarns by hand — a technique that has been practiced in India for centuries. Hand-woven pieces tend to be flatter and lighter than knotted or tufted rugs, with a clean reversible structure and graphic, modern aesthetic.

Coupled with this, pure wool is the soul of Indian carpet weaving — naturally resilient, stain-resistant and warm underfoot. Our handmade wool rugs are crafted in Bhadohi (the carpet capital of India) using premium New Zealand wool spun on traditional looms by master artisans with decades of experience. Each piece is knotted or tufted by hand, hand-finished and washed with herbal solutions to achieve a soft, lustrous finish that synthetic rugs simply cannot replicate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between hand-woven and flatweave?

All flatweaves are hand-woven, but not all hand-woven rugs are flatweaves. Some hand-woven pieces have a short pile produced by special loom techniques. The category is broader than "flatweave" alone.

Are hand-woven rugs durable?

Yes — because they have no glue or backing, hand-woven rugs are very long-lived. They're also reversible, so you can flip them periodically to even out wear.

Why are handmade wool rugs better than machine-made?

Hand-knotted wool rugs use individual wool knots tied by an artisan, which makes them denser, longer-lasting and reversible. Machine-made rugs use glue-backed synthetic fibres that shed and flatten within a few years. A well-made handmade wool rug from Bhadohi will last 30-50+ years.

Is New Zealand wool better than Indian wool?

New Zealand wool has longer staple fibres and a naturally higher lustre, which produces a softer, shinier finish that takes dye beautifully. We use it for our premium collections, while local Indian wool is used for hard-wearing flatweaves and dhurries.
